Genre Influences On My Novel Writing (via @WriteNovelsAus HT: @theBaronCB)

Onil Lad writes about how genre has shaped him as a writer, and how giving up on reading fantasy fiction left him ignorant of all the ‘classics’ of the field and made it harder for him to get into the groove of writing his own novel.

You’re meant to read widely but meandering into literary fiction never helped me getting my novel done. Philip K. Dick stuck to what he knew. Each of his books follows an agenda and delivers in its own unique way.

To create something different in a familiar genre is where I want to get to, but I’m not quite there yet.

If I’d have stuck to Epic Fantasy, I don’t think it would have taken me so long to get this far.

It’s a worthwhile read, and you have to feel for Onil, because it can be a hard journey. I, for one, am not a novel writer (what this actually means in writing terms is ‘I have started and finished a few, all of which are gathering dust in a drawer’).
