Monday Market – Midnight Echo 9 – Opens October 1, 2012 (via @midnightechomag)

Midnight Echo magazine is opening up for Issue #9, with the theme of mythological horror:

The Brothers Grimm defined legend as a historically-grounded folktale. For this purpose, that is not quite the definition we are looking for. We all know legends, yet not all of them are grounded in history. Loch Ness, Bigfoot, Johnny Appleseed… the list goes on. Use this concept to shock and amaze us.

Myth: a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being, hero, or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.

Myths have defined society for as long as there have been human beings. Whether those myths are religious or cultural or a mixture of both, we have always lived with them, one way or another.

They aren’t open for submissions until October 1, 2012, so there’s plenty of time to write something. Midnight Echo pays 3c (AUD) per word up to 5,000 words. There’s no closing date for reading listed yet, so check back after the reading period opens. It doesn’t look like they are accepting poetry for this issue either, but those details may be updated too (they currently list Midnight Echo 8 in the poetry section, so expect a change there).

NB: I just saw that Midnight Echo explicitly states they want standard manuscript format BUT no underlines, italics only. Be very carefully and RtFG (read the friendly guidelines) before submitting, because they will delete your submission unread if you mess this tiny detail up.

  1. Midnight Echo is open to poetry submissions. They are also open to non-fiction (query first) and letters to the editor. If you have any queries, please head to the Midnight Echo facebook page and ask away.
    Cheers!
