Monday Markets – Shock Totem (via @shocktotem, HT: @mbennardo)

Shock Totem has produced some amazing looking magazines (have a look when you click through to the guidelines):

We consider original, unpublished stories within the confines of dark fantasy and horror—mystery, suspense, supernatural, morbid humor, fantasy, etc

They accept fiction up to 5,000 words, but also flash and micro fiction, and pay a healthy 5 cents per word, up to a cap of $250. They’re also looking for poetry and will sometimes grab reprints at a reduced rate.

Non-fiction about real-world horrors up to 2,500 words is also accepted.

Shock Totem has two reading periods during the year, From February to May, and from August to November.

Monday Markets – Wings – July 25, 2013 (via @innsmouthpress, HT: @silvamg)

This sounds like a great anthology, and the recently revealed cover art is gorgeous.

This October, we will have a special themed issue and we need your submissions. The theme is “Wings.” Why wings? “Pigeons from Hell.””The Birds”. “The Raven.” These are only a few tales that have included disquieting winged entities. We want to continue the tradition.

From birds to bats, and Mi-Go to the Mothman, we are looking for short stories, flash fiction, and poetry that flaps and terrifies. Stories should adhere to the general guidelines set by Innsmouth Magazine (See here for word count max, pay rates and the like). We want Weird fiction, we want odd and disquieting tales, we want beauty and grotesqueries.

They pay 1c CAD for short stories from 1,300 to 5,000 words. This issue will also accept unsolicited poetry at $10 a poem.

Monday Markets – I, Automaton Anthology – July 15 2013

This is a steampunk-y anthology is coming up in the next two months:

Imagine a world where the Robotic Age came early, riding a wave of steam power and Babbage analytical machines. This is the world we want you to explore. The brave new world of steam powered Artificial Intelligence. What are the implications of this in the alternative Victorian Worlds? Robotic servants displacing an entire class of people? The effects the rise of robotic blood sports would have on the Victorian ethos and decorum. Or even how warfare would change with the birth of robotic warriors fighting mighty battles for their human overlords? How would the lives of famous people affect or be affected by these new automatons?

They’re after 1,000-7,000 word short stories, and paying token amounts in several (publicly listed) tiers, from $60 to $10 USD, so nothing amazing but still of interest.

Monday Markets – Unidentified Funny Objects 2 – May 31 2013

I don’t see a lot of humorous anthologies around (that doesn’t mean they don’t exist, just that I don’t see them). This collection, featuring stories by Robert Silverberg, Mike Resnick, Ken Liu, Esther Friesner, Tim Pratt, and Jody Lynn Nye, looks great:

We’re looking for speculative stories with a strong humor element. Think Resnick and Sheckley, Fredric Brown and Douglas Adams.  We welcome quality flash fiction and non-traditional narratives. Take chances, try something new, just make sure that your story is funny.

Puns and stories that are little more than vehicles for delivering a punch line at the end aren’t likely to win us over.

They’re after 500-6,000 word stories, and are paying $0.05 cents per word as well as a contributor copy.

Note: you need to remove your name from the manuscript, as they will be reading submissions blind.

Also:

If your story is rejected before May 31 you may send another, but we will only consider up to two submissions per author. If your second submission is rejected, we will ask you to wait until next year, when we’re reading for UFO3.

Monday Markets – Kasma SF Magazine

Behold:

We prefer short science fiction between 1000 and 5000 words in length, though we’ll consider stories that are longer. Ideally, we’d like to receive fiction that is intelligent, with well thought out plots and characters. Beyond this, exactly what happens in your world with your characters is up to you. We enjoy a broad range and don’t want to stifle author creativity by having elaborate expectations. Often enough, the best stories come as a surprise.

Although Kasma is a science fiction publication, we have been known to (rarely) make an exception and wander into other genres (e.g. fantasy).

We will be publishing an anthology of vampire fiction Dying to Live in October 2013. Submissions are being accepted until June 1, 2013, which is a change from our original date of August. We are looking for dark vampire stories; please do not send any stories about vampires that sparkle!

Monday Markets – Kisses by Clockwork – April to October 2013 (via @TiconderogaP HT: @alanbaxter))

Verbatim from a post Mr Alan Baxter sent around:

Ticonderoga Publications is opening the reading period for a new themed anthology. This anthology, with the working title Kisses by Clockwork, will combine the fun and irreverence of steampunk fiction with an element of romance. There might be stories of airships, gaslight romance, retro-futurism, post-apocalyptic steam-powered cities, analytical engines or neo-Victorian ladies and gentlemen.

The relationship/s in the stories should have an emphasis on romance rather than erotica, but well-placed steamy scenes necessary for the plot are of course, acceptable.

The anthology will be edited by Liz Grzyb (Scary KissesMore Scary KissesDamnation & DamesDreaming of DjinnThe Year’s Best Australian Fantasy and Horror 2010 and 2011) and will be published by Ticonderoga Publications in 2014.

They’re looking for stories from 2,000 to 7,500 words, paid at 2.5 AUD cents/word and 2 contributor’s copies.

Monday Markets – Crowded Magazine

An interesting approach to publishing a magazine:

Crowded has a few unusual features. Like most speculative fiction magazines we have open submissions, unlike most speculative fiction magazines we also have an open(ish) rating system. If you subscribe or submit a story of at least 500 words you can access the system, rate stories and make (helpful) comments. We use the ‘wisdom of the crowd’ to help us sort the best from the rest, and then we publish the best.

They publish every 3 months, take up to 20,000 words of speculative fiction, and pay $0.05 Australian dollars per word.

Monday Markets – Sword and Laser Anthology – May 15, 2013 (via @swordandlaser)

Sword and Laser is looking for stories for their first ever anthology:

What are we looking for in a story? Diversity.  Not helpful?  OK.  Here are some better guidelines.

• Interesting characters. They can be evil or nice or mean or stupid, but they should be worth spending time reading about.

•Original settings, point-of-view, and voice. Not necessarily within your story, although that’s important too. But we want lots of different kinds of stories in the anthology. Hard for you to manage when you’re not reading all the other stories, but suffice to say if you’ve seen a story like yours before, it’s less likely to get chosen.

• Unique experience. We’re not going to ask you to ‘write what you know’ and also expect stories about aliens and dragons… form most of you… but situations and reactions drawn from your unique experiences that expose us to something new, will definitely be a plus.

• Stuff happening. Believe it or not, some people write stories where nothing happens. Please don’t be one of those people. Have a central, compelling idea or conflict. We want exciting ideas and character growth.  At least a little.

• Love, laughs, fights, philosophy, insight are all also welcome.

• It needs to be in the genres of science fiction and fantasy. We define this pretty loosely of course. Not every story has to have spaceships or castles. We hope they don’t! But the farther you stray from the center of the sword or laser styles, the less likely we’ll want the story.

They pay USD$200 upon acceptance, and are looking for stories from 1,500 – 7,500 words (with a little bit of flexibility).

Monday Markets – The Stars Like Sand – Australian Spec Fic Poetry – June 4, 2013

Edited by Tim Jones and P. S. Cottier, is the forthcoming:

The Stars Like Sand, [...] a planned anthology of Australian speculative poetry. Speculative poetry is poetry in the science fiction, fantasy, horror and related genres. [...] It is intended that the anthology will include both new and previously-published poetry, and include a historical survey of the field. The anthology is intended for publication in 2014.

You can send up to 3 poems in the requested genres. Note: Payment is a contributor copy only. I normally don’t support no-pay projects, but the poetry field, and certainly speculative fiction poetry, needs more markets. Also, I know Tim a little via the Twitters, so I’m happy to endorse this one, for what it’s worth.

Get writing! They’re also accepting previously published poetry.
